Data Sources & Limitations
Our data is derived from:
- SEC 13F filings (reported quarterly, with 45-day delay)
- Other publicly available regulatory filings
Due to reporting delays and filing requirements, the data shown may not reflect current holdings or recent transactions.
⚠️ Critical 13F Limitations
13F filings provide an incomplete picture. Understanding these limitations is essential for interpreting the data correctly:
- Short positions are invisible — 13F filings do NOT report short sales. A fund showing long shares may simultaneously hold a larger short position that completely offsets or reverses their apparent stance.
- Only bought options appear — Purchased calls and puts are reported, but written/sold options are not. A fund's options strategy may be the opposite of what their reported options suggest.
- Long positions may be hedges — A reported long stock position could be a hedge against derivatives, short positions, or other instruments not visible in 13F data.
- 45-day reporting delay — Positions shown are from the end of the prior quarter. Funds may have completely changed their positions by the time filings become public.
- $100M threshold — Only institutional managers with $100M+ in qualifying assets must file. Smaller funds and certain asset classes are excluded.
- No foreign securities — Only U.S. exchange-traded securities are reported. International holdings are not included.
